Examination of the factors influencing the stability of the plasma-activated evaporation of aluminum in top-down arrangement for the deposition of anticorrosive coatings
- The present study deals with a process of high rate thermal evaporation for the deposition of aluminum layers on small parts in a drum. The aim of the present study is a stable evaporation process for a reproducible of the corrosion protection coatings. The procedure builds on a technology development for plasma-activated high rate evaporation and Pulse Magnetron Sputtering. The physical vapor deposition was carried out in the device ALMA 1000, a drum coating equipment developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology (FEP). For Corrosion protection, the main application, an aluminum wire is continuously fed to evaporation boats where it is evaporated. For the improvement of mechanical stability and hardness of the aluminum coatings, chromium inter-layers sputter are deposited in an alternating sputtering process. During the deposition of monolayers and multilayers for corrosion protection the main process is the evaporation of aluminum. The parameters the wire feed, plasma activation and the state of the evaporator boats have been varied, to study their influence on the aluminum process and the influence on the deposition rate. Based on the results, a range of stable operation of the evaporator has been defined, that enables reproducible coating process. iii
