Investigation on tribological characteristics of silver-coated electrical contacts

  • Through fretting tests on self-made test samples consisting of the copper alloy CuCrAgFeTiSi and a 2 to 4 µm thick galvanic silver-coating, the tribological behaviour of electrical plug-in connectors shall be investigated and a wear- and lifespan-model shall be developed. By varying the contact normal force, the stroke, the oscillating frequency and the thickness of the passivation layer, the wear mechanisms leading to the electrical dysfunction are identified. Because of the adhesion between the silver-coatings the friction force will increase and end up in a typical friction force peak. The applied tangential force will then disrupt the contact mate with the lower hardness. After breaking up the material bond along the grain boundaries the silver-coating will break at the edge of the contact and the copper alloy is exposed to the surrounding atmosphere. Tribo-chemical reactions will be recognized immediately. Because of the oxide particles both friction partners are separated electrically from each other and a first increase of the contact resistance will occur. At the time the oxide covers all of the contact area the contact resistance will remain at its high values. The lower the normal force the more oscillating cycles can be applied before the friction force peak occurs. It is the same with smaller strokes and with falling below a stroke of 5 µm only partial slip will be inherent, thus there are still well conductive parts in the centre of the contact after applying infinite oscillating cycles theoretically.
