  • The present study contributes to the knowledge of the potential of alternative valve lift functions to raise the flow of exhaust enthalpy and the average gas temperature in the combustion chamber. In the first part, the basic physics of various strategys for heating are collected. Furthermore, preliminary work from the literature on the topic valve lift functions and control times be summarized and explained. In the second part, first a preliminary test for the relevance of the exhaust gas temperature and the exhaust gas mass flow. Then, on a car, single-cylinder engine with common-rail direct injection, the potentials of alternative valve lift functions be examined at two different operating points in terms of characteristic values of the and the indication data: operating point 1 (idle point, cold) and 2 operating point (slight acceleration phase). The results of the different strategies are within the individual operating points brought into correlation to determine the best strategy. Finally, the essence of the work is summarized and an outlook for further studies on a full-scale engine.
