The reputation of the French oversea territories within the population of France métropolitaine - analysed with the help of online comments

  • France has kept several of its colonies after the end of the colonialism. The French Republic possesses today territories all around the world. A distinction must be made between the overseas departments (Guadeloupe, Mayotte and La Réunion), collectivities uniques (Martinique and Guyane) and the overseas collectivities (Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, Wallis and Futuna, French-Polynesia, New Caledonia, French Southern and Antarctic Lands and Clipperton). In this Bachelor, I paid particular attention to the overseas departments and the collectivités uniques because these territories have almost the same legal status as the mainland's departments. They all elect the French president and their currency is the Euro. All 5 territories are former colonies. This is why the Bachelor thesis has one chapter about the French colonial era. After that, social and economical differences between the oversea territories and the French mainland were analysed and explained. A lot of French citizens in the mainland claim that the oversea territories are to expensive for the mainland and that these territories should become independant because they do not serve the mainland. In a first step, I analysed French media and tried to examine both sides - opponents and supporters of the French oversea territories. In a second step, French forums and comments of both sides were analysed and their arguments were presented. At the same time, a linguistic analysis was made in order to discover which linguistic strategies are being used to strengthen arguments or opinions. That is why the central research question is: Which linguistic strategies are being used in forums in order to strengthen the reputation of the French oversea territories within the population of France métropolitaine? During the analysis of online comments, it was conspicuous that there are more opponents than supporters. Both sides do not only use variuos exclamation marks at the end of a sentence in order to emphasize their arguments, but they often use three or more suspension points at the beginning or the end of a sentence. On top of that a lot of opponents and supporters work with metaphors in order to strengthen their arguments through generated images. There could also be found differences between the linguistic strategies that were used by supporters and opponents: Only the supporters used capital letters in order to stress their arguments or to draw more attention to an argument. On top of that, they use irony to say exactly the opposit of what they are writing. The opponents often use 3 or more question marks at the end of a sentence. This linguistic strategy expresses their opinion about something they have heard or read before. Only the opponents work with sarcasm. To summarize, the French mainland and its oversea territories have a lot of differences and in a lot of the analysed online comments, the oversea territories were judged in a very negative way. The supporters stand up for the oversea territories and try to defend and present them in a positive way.
